Reporting Responsibilities;
- a) Reports to: Senior Court Officer II, High Court Criminal, Suva
- b) Liaises with: High Court Criminal Staff, Court Support Staff, Judicial Officers
- c) Subordinates: Assistant Court Officers (High Court Criminal), GWEs (Messenger- High Court Criminal)
The Position
The position reports to the Senior Court Officer II and assist in the administration of the High Court Criminal Division (Suva). Responsible for ensuring the proper conduct of Court sessions and assisting Judicial Officers in all aspects relating to court cases and administration matters whenever required, compliance of orders and directions in conformity with the rules of the High Court and assisting the Senior Court Officer in supervising the Registry staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Preparation of Special Interpreters and other payment vouchers;
- Leave planning for the staff and assist Senior Court Officers in supervising staff;
- Preparation of case management (aggravated robbery & illicit drugs);
- Preparation of monthly case statistics;
- Preparation of assessment reports for staff;
- Assist the Senior Court Officer on implementing on-the-job-training;
- Preparation of Master Diary for Court;
- Security of courtrooms and court files;
- Registration [originate files]: criminal trials, appeals, miscellaneous and review as per instructions of the Senior Court officer, checking of typed records to correspond with the original hand written notes of the originating court and applications are within time and entries in the registers, diaries, preparation of notices;
- Accurate interpretation and translation;
- Provide counter service and answering telephones;
- Assist in any other duties as and when assigned by the superiors.
SELECTION CRITERIA
The Person
The Applicants must have passed Form six/seven examinations with at least five [5] years work experience in interpretation duties or similar OR a relevant Diploma/Degree from any recognized institution with the same years of work experience in interpretation field as stated above. A passed in the Department Examinations X1 & X2 and service Examination H1, H2 or H are an added advantageous with the following Knowledge, Experience, Skills and Abilities are required to successfully undertake this role
Knowledge and Experience
- Practical, working knowledge of Legal/Court procedures and processes;
- Sound knowledge and understanding of Legal Practitioners decree 2009, Trust Account Act 1996, Department Policies, Regulations and court Procedures.
- Understanding of the Fijian Constitution and applicable laws of Fiji;
- Well versed with filing and Record Management;
- Experience in interpretation work.
Skills and Abilities
- strong written and oral communication skills together with public relations and customer service skills
- Demonstrated ability to effectively provide interpretations service in an open court;
- Ability to report writing and maintaining confidentiality of information;
- Demonstrated ability to organize workload, supervise staff and work cooperatively within a team environment;
- Ability to follow instructions and meet set deadlines in particular with regards to Court Registry activities;
- Capacity to utilize computer programs to support the operations of the Unit.
Personal Character and Eligibility
Applicants for employment in the Judicial Department must be Fijian Citizens, under Age 60, in sound health, with a clear police record. The selected applicant will be required to provide a medical report and police clearance prior to taking up duty.
