Reporting Responsibilities;
- Reports to: Senior Court Officer I
- Liaises with: Judicial Officer, Court Support Staff
- Subordinates: Nil
Position Purpose
This position is responsible to the Senior Court Officer I of the High Court Civil through the Officer-in-Charge of Court Reporting Unit in providing proper and accurate transcription record of court cases.
Key Responsibilities
- Checking that all necessary documents are in the file;
- Liaising and clarifying with respective Court Clerks for any vague legal term mentioned during the course of deliberation of the case;
- Ensure that upon completion of transcription, pages are numbered and records are properly printed before dispatching;
- Typing any other official document assigned by the Supervisor;
- Ensuring timely and accurate vetting of verbatim notes for appeal purpose.
SELECTION CRITERIA
The Person
A pass in Fiji Seventh Form Examination is necessary together with at least 4 years work experience as a Typist with 60wpm typing speed on manual typewriter or 70wpm typing speed on electronic/electric typewriter OR a Diploma in Secretarial Studies/Office Administration or equivalent from a recognized institution with 60wpm typing speed on manual typewriter or 70wpm typing speed on electronic/electric typewriter. Shorthand skills is an advantage. The following Knowledge, Experience, Skills and Abilities are also required to successfully undertake this role:
Knowledge and Experience
- Sound knowledge and understanding of legal terms, court etiquette and procedures;
- Understanding of the Fijian Constitution, Acts, Policies, Rules and Regulations;
- At least 4 years of demonstrated experience as a Typist or in a similar role;
- Experience in performing transcribing duties would be an added advantage.
Skills and Abilities
The applicant should have demonstrated the following skills and abilities:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
- Good typing and listening skills and a proven ability to perform accurate and efficient transcribing duties;
- Have the right attitude and abilities to work with timelines and stress in regards to recording and typing of court proceedings and appeal hearing;
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality in a sensitive work environment;
- Demonstrated ability to organize workloads and work as a team;
- Capacity to utilize computer programs to support the operations of the Registry/Unit.
Personal Character and Eligibility
Applicants for employment in the Judicial Department must be Fijian Citizens, under Age 60, in sound health, with a clear police record. The selected applicant will be required to provide a medical report and police clearance prior to taking up duty.
